Boards & Commissions
Here is a list of the City of Mount Vernon Boards and Commissions. If you have any questions regarding meetings or members, please call the Mayor's office or the Safety Service Director's Office.

Board of Property Maintenance Appeals
This board meets to hear arguments from property owners who have received administrative sanctions and wish to appeal them before a citizen-run board. If the property owner is found to be free from the violation, then the penalty is rescinded. If the violation is upheld, then the next step of appeals is to the Court of Common Pleas.

Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA)
The purpose of the BZA is to hear appeals of decisions rendered by zoning administrators, interpret unclear provisions in the zoning ordinance, and decide on applications by landowners to permit buildings or land uses which vary from the zoning regulations.

Civil Service Commission
The purpose of the Civil Service Commission is to govern the civil service regulations and oversee the budget of the Merit System Administrator. Board members develop an understanding of labor laws and civil service regulations.

Historical Review Commission
The purpose of the Historical Review Commission is to advise on the preservation of certain historical buildings and districts within the City of Mount Vernon. To maintain the architectural theme and neighborhood characteristics through the different buildings and homes. This group also helps to educate the public on the benefits of owning property in a historic district and to aid in the enhancement of property values within the districts.

Municipal Planning Commission
The purpose of the MPC is to balance the public good with private property rights and interests. The planning commission established under section 713.01 of the Revised Code shall make plans and maps of the whole or any portion of the municipal corporation, and of any land outside thereof, which, in the opinion of the commission, is related to the planning of the municipal corporation, and make changes in such plans or maps when it deems it advisable.

Patriotic Memorial Committee
This committee organizes and oversees the functions and activities of the Memorial Day Parade and service. Committee members work closely with the Mayor’s office and the Knox County Veterans Services.

Recreation Board
This board meets monthly and governs the plans for the use of city-owned parks and programs. Recommending budget items on an annual basis as well as managing the use of the different parks’ recreational spots (not including Ariel~Foundation Park), are among the chief purposes. Coordinating an annual Easter egg hunt and overseeing the administration of the Hiawatha Water Park are also significant duties of this board. They work closely with the Parks Superintendent and the Auditor.

Shade Tree & Beautification Committee
The purpose of this commission is to provide and protect the shade tree landscape for the city. Providing a shaded canopy improves environmental, social, and economic developments. This commission works closely with the Engineering office as well as the Parks department.

Utilities Commission
This commission shall regulate the rates and the services of the water, wastewater, and stormwater utilities for users of the city utilities. The Utilities Commission will set the rate for the wastewater billing, whereas City Council sets the rate for the water department and the stormwater department.
